Taking a Stand Against Unfair Regulations

We are protecting California’s cardroom communities.

The Coalition to Protect Cardroom Communities represents local communities, small business owners, cardroom workers, and advocates for standing up against unfair and overreaching regulatory actions that threaten California’s historic cardrooms and card-playing traditions. We believe in protecting jobs, ensuring regulations are balanced, transparent, and rooted in community interests, not political agendas.

A History of Cardrooms, State Regulation, & Tribal Casino Relations

California cardrooms are among the most heavily regulated gambling establishments in the nation, adhering to strict state laws designed to protect workers and consumers. These local establishments support over 32,000 direct and indirect jobs and generate nearly $500 million in state and local tax revenue annually. Cardrooms have been part of the California economy since the 1850s, predating tribal casinos by over a century. At their peak, more than 170 cardrooms served as economic and social hubs across the state; today, only 72 remain. They offer a smoke-free, more intimate alternative to large casinos, free of flashing slot machines and distractions, focused on card games and community.
